The "W" in Christmas
Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience. I had cut back on none essential obligations -- extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending. Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas.
My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six-year-old. For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant." I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher, She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then.
Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise. So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.
Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment - songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. So, when my son's class rose to sing, "Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.
Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads Those in the front row -- center stage -- held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."
The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down -- totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W." The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W." Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities.
For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:
"C H R I S T W A S L O V E"
And, I believe, He still is.
Amazed in His presence...
Humbled by His love.
May each of you have a Merry Christmas as you reflect on His Amazing Love for us...

Donuts!
Usually, we start about 10 am. Dad rolls the dough, then he and I cut it while Mom deep fries the shapes. And all the while we listen to Christmas music, mostly the Chipmunks!!
But this year, Dad had to go shopping for a new work truck and Mom didn't wake me up when she was ready to start...so, she did them mostly alone this year. :-(
We got 16 dozen large donuts, 7 dozen small donuts, and tons of donut holes and scraps! Num!
We usually get quite creative with some of the shapes, but this year we only got 2 crowns. bummer.
Changes
I was also told that I should go blonde. I doubt that would happen as I really like the color of my hair now. If someone had told me to go blonde a couple years ago I just might have. But...I have never colored my hair and I intend to keep it that way!

“Surprise Me, God!”
Every day, for thirty days, I pray and ask God to surprise me? “Surprise Me, God.” Nothing more, nothing less. Three words. Not asking for something in particular. Not giving him my list. Not presenting my agenda. Just inviting him to barge into my life in any old way he pleases-to crash into the busyness of my schedule and mess with it.This is something I will be doing...Surprise me, God! It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming month!
***The turn signals on my car work now!!!*** :-D
Porcelain Heart
As you can figure out from my last post, I cleaned my room (!!) and found something that I had written... a few months ago. (Since it was at the bottom of one my piles of papers, probably July-ish:)
So often we hide our hurt so that no one knows that we need prayer. We try to fix ourselves and our pain all alone and that gives no chance for others to come to our side and minister to us and be a friend. It's easy to put on a smile and pretend we are OK. By doing that we push others away and end up with no true friends who care and share our burdens. We end up dying inside and becoming bitter and feeling unloved.(You have no idea how hard it was for me to not edit this!)
Sometimes, talking to God will not fully relieve a problem or give us peace from the burden. We are only human and need some skin to grab on to. Not meaning that God can't give us absolute peace on His own, it just helps to know that another human is there and has our back.
Now, what I should have said in the second paragraph was maybe more that we don’t allow God to ‘fully relieve a problem’ by not sharing it with someone, because He works thru that other person to give us peace. This is all I have on this right now! My thots are subject to change...
Here is my current favorite song, written and sung by Barlow Girl:
Porcelain Heart
Broken heart one more time
Pick yourself up, why even cry
Broken pieces in your hands
Wonder how you'll make it whole
You know, You pray
This can't be the way
You cry, You say
Something's got to change
And mend this porcelain heart of mine
Someone said "A broken heart
Would sting at first
Then make you stronger"
You wonder why this pain remains
Were hearts made just to break
Creator, only You take brokenness
And create it into beauty again
My ranting is over...for now. I had a purpose for saying all this, but I have no energy to say it anymore.
